This article is part of a series on Shoreline Partners’ core values.
Selling a business is not just about developing a marketing strategy or finding interested buyers. Success depends on consistent forward momentum from the day an engagement begins until the sale proceeds arrive in the seller’s account. At Shoreline Partners, we call that Relentless Execution. It is the commitment to moving every engagement forward with urgency, discipline, and persistence, while continuously solving problems that might otherwise delay or derail a transaction.

Moving to Market Faster
Many business owners are surprised to learn how long some firms take to prepare a company for market. It is not uncommon for a process to stretch two or even three months before prospective acquirers are ever contacted.
At Shoreline Partners, we have designed our process to move much more quickly. As part of our Sell-Side Services process, we conduct a focused preparation meeting with our clients that typically lasts three to four hours. During that session, we work to understand every aspect of the business, including its operations, customers, employees, competitive position, growth opportunities, financial metrics, and unique strengths.
Our goal is to provide the marketing materials and supporting documents needed to go to market within 45 days of engagement, allowing us to begin reaching prospective buyers in 45 to 60 days. Speed alone is not the objective. Rather, we believe thorough preparation and efficient execution can coexist, creating momentum from the very beginning of the engagement.
Persistent Marketing Generates Results
Once the client approves the marketing strategy and prospect list, the outreach process begins. Relentless execution means more than sending a few emails and hoping for responses. We systematically contact prospective acquirers through multiple email communications followed by personal telephone calls, LinkedIn contacts, etc. Our objective is to have actual contact with 80–85% of the approved prospect list.
That level of persistence matters. Many potential buyers are busy operators and executives. They may not respond to an initial inquiry even when an acquisition opportunity aligns perfectly with their strategic objectives. Consistent follow-up ensures that opportunities do not fall through the cracks simply because a buyer missed an email or delayed a response.
To keep clients informed throughout the process, we provide weekly reports detailing the outreach efforts completed and the progress made with prospective buyers. That transparency reflects another of our core values: Straightforward and Unfiltered Communication. Clients should never wonder what is happening behind the scenes. They deserve to see the work being performed and the progress being made every week.
Creating Competitive Tension
Generating interest is only the beginning. Once buyers engage in meaningful discussions and submit proposals, our focus shifts toward evaluating the opportunities and identifying the best path forward.
We review each indication of interest and proposal with our client in detail, discussing what they like, what concerns them, and which terms deserve further negotiation. The objective is not simply to obtain offers. It is to negotiate and refine those offers until we reach a letter of intent that our client is comfortable signing.
This phase often requires balancing economics, transaction structure, timing, and post-closing considerations including the future for key employees. Relentless execution means continuing to push the process forward while helping clients evaluate the tradeoffs that accompany every transaction.
A Signed LOI Is Not the Finish Line
Many sellers view the signing of a letter of intent as the end of the process. We view it as the beginning of the next phase. As we often remind clients, the transaction is not complete until the wire transfer arrives.
Following execution of the letter of intent, we coordinate the buyer’s due diligence process. This frequently includes financial reviews, operational diligence, legal diligence, and often a detailed quality of earnings analysis. Working alongside our clients and their advisors, we help gather and organize the information buyers need while striving to keep the process moving efficiently.
During this stage, delays can become costly. Questions arise. New issues surface. Unexpected requests are made. Our responsibility is to maintain momentum and help all parties navigate challenges without losing sight of the ultimate objective: closing the transaction.
Solving Problems to Get Deals Closed
Relentless execution often overlaps with another Shoreline core value: Creative Problem Solving. Transactions rarely proceed exactly as planned. Buyers identify concerns during due diligence. Documentation issues emerge. Third-party approvals become necessary. Attorneys may take rigid positions that create unnecessary obstacles.
While lawyers appropriately advocate for their clients, business transactions sometimes require practical solutions that allow both sides to move forward. We regularly facilitate those discussions, helping identify outcomes that may not be perfect for either party but are acceptable to both.
We also take a proactive approach to transaction documentation. For example, we often prepare draft disclosure schedules required by the purchase agreement. This helps accelerate the documentation process while reducing legal costs for our clients. For sellers unfamiliar with these documents, our article “Disclosure Schedules: What Are They and How Do They Impact a Seller?” provides additional background.
When Persistence Makes the Difference
We often say that some deals close simply because “we don’t let them not close.”
One example involved the sale of a multi-location, multi-state auto service business. The transaction required landlord consents for assignment of numerous leases. As closing approached, two landlords hadn’t yet provided the required approvals, threatening to delay the entire transaction.
Rather than allowing the issue to stop the deal from closing, we worked with the buyer and seller to develop an alternative solution. The parties agreed to place an amount equal to twice the allocated value of the affected locations into escrow pending receipt of the landlord consents. The arrangement protected both sides, addressed the immediate concern, and allowed the transaction to close on schedule.
Neither party viewed the solution as perfect, but it worked. That is often what relentless execution looks like in practice. It means identifying obstacles early, maintaining focus on the client’s objectives, and finding practical ways to move forward when challenges arise.
Relentless Execution in Every Engagement
Relentless Execution is not a single step in our process. It is the mindset that drives every step. From preparing a company for market, to contacting buyers, negotiating offers, coordinating diligence, and managing transaction documentation, we remain focused on one objective: helping our clients successfully close the transactions they want to achieve.
